Countdown to Hypo Awareness Week 2024 – just three weeks to go!

The highly anticipated Hypo Awareness Week returns next month, aiming to raise vital awareness about hypoglycaemia among healthcare professionals in the UK and Ireland.

Taking place from October 7 to 13, Hypo Awareness Week is an annual event which provides a platform for the diabetes community to launch local campaigns aimed at educating healthcare professionals about the signs, symptoms, and treatment of hypoglycaemia.

An impressive 576 healthcare sites across the UK and Ireland have committed to participating in seminars, courses, and activities aimed at promoting best practices and increasing understanding of hypoglycaemia.

Commonly referred to as hypos, this condition occurs when a person’s blood glucose level is too low. It must be treated quickly, as in severe cases, it can be life-threatening.

This year, the campaign takes inspiration from the Olympics, challenging healthcare professionals to become champions by mastering the skills required to recognise the symptoms, identify the signs, and administer the appropriate treatments for hypoglycaemia.

Event manager Emily Mayhew said: “Hypo Awareness Week is a crucial opportunity for nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff to come together to enhance their knowledge and understanding of hypoglycaemia.

“Participants play a key role in raising awareness of the signs, symptoms, and treatments of hypos among their non-specialist colleagues, ensuring careful management of in-patients, which can provide immediate benefits.”
