Results from international programme supporting people with type 2 diabetes to be revealed
The latest results from an international programme supporting people with type 2 diabetes will be revealed next month.
The DWELL Project has been helping people in the UK, France, Belgium and the Netherlands through a non-clinical, holistic 12-week patient support programme covering education, nutrition, physical activity and well-being.
The programme includes motivational interviewing and peer support to empower participants to self-manage their condition, improve their well-being, lose weight, reduce medication and enjoy a better quality of life.
The latest results from the programme, which began in 2017, will be revealed at the free online DWELL Final Conference next month.
Project Manager Anna Best said: “We’ve got some great stories to share from our participants about how the programme has helped to improve their lives and we’re pleased to reveal that we’re seeing HbA1c results going in the right direction.
“We also want to share the experiences of participants who took part in the programme before the pandemic who we have recently revisited.
“It was heartening to see that whilst some people saw a dip in their progress during the height of the pandemic, they’ve since returned to the healthier habits they learned during the programme.
“We can’t wait to share our findings, and the next steps for the DWELL Project, at our conference.
“We’ll also be giving our audience the chance to hear from guest speakers who are passionate about the prevention of non-communicable diseases and are experts in their fields.”
Among the speakers are Christine Hancock, who founded C3 Collaborating for Health after a career working in nursing in the NHS and is a former president of the International Council of Nurses.
She will talk about the work of C3 which works with a diverse range of stakeholders to tackle the three main causes of major chronic diseases – tobacco, what we eat and drink and a lack of physical activity.
Christine will be joined by fellow guest speaker Konstantinos Makrilakis who is a Professor of Internal Medicine-Metabolic Diseases at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School, Greece.
Konstantinos has been actively involved in diabetes since 2002 as a clinician, researcher, educator and member of national and international diabetes associations.
He is currently the General Secretary of the Hellenic Diabetes Association (HDA) and has served twice as a Board member of IDF-Europe.
The conference will take place from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Thursday, October 13.
